Abstract
Transcurre el siglo XIII, época de persecuciones religiosas. En Europa se organizan para rescatar cautivos cristianos, nacen las Ordenes Militares y entre ellas: La Real Orden de la Merced, redentora de cautivos; con el pasar del tiempo se hace netamente religiosa, y pasa a América con los Descubridores Españoles. Sus religiosos llegan en calidad de Capellanes militares a todos los confines de América Española. Así también llegan a Chile se establecen allá por el 1500, y desde entonces se han consagrado al noble propósito de ofrecer un camino de luz y esperanza para los habitantes de esta Patria, vibrando con todos sus anhelos y aspiraciones y compartiendo sus horas de desgracia y desolación. Para el autor de este trabajo histórico-arquitectónico la postulación del tema Arquitectura Religiosa de Valparaíso y específicamente referido a la Iglesia de la Merced ofreció la oportunidad, al final de su carrera universitaria de rendir un testimonio de reconocimiento agradecido a la Orden Mercedaria que bajo su alero lo guió por “el sendero de ciencia y virtud” como reza en una de sus estrofas el himno del Colegio San Pedro Nolasco dependiente de la orden.
In the 13th century, a time of religious persecution, the Mercedarian Order was founded in Europe to rescue Christian captives. Over time, the order became purely religious and accompanied the Spanish explorers to the Americas. The Mercedarians arrived in Chile in the 1500s and have since dedicated themselves to the noble purpose of offering a path of light and hope to the people of this country. They have shared in the hopes and aspirations of the Chilean people, as well as in their times of misfortune and despair. For the author of this historical and architectural study, the topic of Religious Architecture in Valparaíso, and specifically the Church of La Merced, provided an opportunity to express gratitude to the Mercedarian Order at the end of his university career. As one verse of the hymn of the Colegio San Pedro Nolasco, a school affiliated with the order, states, the Mercedarians guided him along the path of science and virtue.
