Abstract
This thesis studies the development of the Playa Ancha neighborhood in Valparaíso, Chile, from the late 19th to the early 20th centuries. The aim of the study is to understand the factors that influenced the growth and development of the neighborhood, and to identify the characteristics of the housing that was built during this period. The study begins by situating Playa Ancha within the broader context of Valparaíso's development. This analysis shows that Playa Ancha grew rapidly in the late 19th century, due to a number of factors, including the expansion of the port, the arrival of immigrants, and the construction of new infrastructure. The study then focuses on the Population Bueras, a neighborhood that was built in Playa Ancha in 1875. The analysis of the Population Bueras shows that it was a mixed-income neighborhood, with a variety of housing types. The study also identifies the different construction techniques that were used in the neighborhood. The study concludes by discussing the implications of the findings. The study suggests that the growth of Playa Ancha was driven by a number of factors, including economic growth, immigration, and the construction of new infrastructure. The study also suggests that the housing that was built in Playa Ancha during this period reflected the diversity of the neighborhood's population.
