Abstract
Imagine Valparaíso in the 19th century. It is late afternoon on a day in late autumn. A small three-masted ship has just anchored in the bay, and after briefly attracting the attention of the locals, it becomes just one more among the countless vessels moored there. The arrival of a ship like this is not an unusual event for the city's inhabitants. However, this arrival will not be one of many. On the contrary, it will be the origin of a story that, intertwined with Valparaíso's history, will unfold, causing events of great significance for the city, both spiritually and physically. Among the passengers who disembark from the 'Sylphyde' the following morning are six religious men belonging to the French Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, who are on their way to their missions in Oceania. Many events will occur from this point on. The purpose of this historical-architectural research project is to attempt to describe, relate, and interpret these events until their materialization in a work of great importance for the history of the city and for the history of architecture in Chile: the Church of the Sacred Hearts in Valparaíso.
